This page has instructions for receiving, taking, and submitting the closed-book version of the Skills Quizzes for EGR 103. Here's the executive summary of the process, followed by much clearer instructions below:

  • You will access the quiz by going to a Sakai "Test & Quizzes" entry; clicking into the entry will start a timer that will end when you upload a picture of the cover page to Sakai. The Sakai timer does not really matter all that much except to give me a general idea of how much time it took to get the quiz, print the quiz, take the quiz, take a picture of the first page of the quiz, and upload that picture.
  • You should take 75 minutes to take the quiz (more if you have approval from SDAO for additional time / breaks). You will be writing down your start and end time on the quiz. The start time should be when you actually start working on the quiz (i.e. do not include the time it takes to download or print the quiz).
  • When you are done or time is up (whichever comes first), write the end time on the cover page, take a picture of the cover page, and upload that back to the Sakai "Test & Quizzes" page.
  • Finally, you will create and upload a single PDF to Gradescope so we can see the quiz. Make sure each picture / scan is clear and legible. When you upload, you need to indicate which page(s) of the PDF relate(s) to which problem(s).

Receiving

  • The quiz will be attached as a PDF to an assessment in the "Tests & Quizzes" section of the Sakai page. When you go to the assessment page, you will have the option to open the question including the quiz. Once you click the Honor Pledge statement and then click Begin Assessment, the (again, mostly irrelevant) Sakai timer will start.

Taking

Timing

You will get 75 minutes to take the quiz. If you have a letter from the SDAO giving you more time on quizzes, apply those accommodations for yourself.

Resources

  • The closed-book part is closed-book! You are 'not allowed to use your textbook(s), your notes, your prior work (homework, labs), anything on the Sakai or Classes site for this class (including posted solutions), or anything on Pundit.
  • You are not allowed to consult any person other than the instructor or teaching assistants of this course in any form (text, phone, email, message board, etc)
  • The grade for closed-book parts of the quiz is based on earnest effort rather than correctness - cheating just deprives you of the opportunity to figure out what you know really well, what you kind of know, and what you do not know. Also, cheating opens you up to the opportunity of taking a two-semester "break" from the university to figure out how to live an ethical life in the face of adversity. Maintain and protect your integrity at all times.

Documenting Work

There are several options for taking the quiz:

  • Print it out and work on the quiz document itself, using extra blank pages as needed
  • Use a tablet to electronically write on the quiz or on previously blank pages (save early, often, and to different file names!)
  • Others not listed above that would allow you to make a PDF of all the original test pages and any extra work you want graded.

Submitting

You will upload a picture of the cover page to Sakai and then some time later you will upload a single complete PDF to Gradescope. You will submit to Gradescope because that is where the quiz is actually graded.

Creating the Document

  • If you take the quiz electronically you just need to save the file as a PDF.
  • If you take it on paper, you will need to get high quality images of your work saved to a PDF.
    • The easiest way to do this is if you have a scanner -- most scanners will allow for scan-to-PDF or scan-to-image that can then be turned into a PDF.
    • In the absence of a scanner, you can take high-quality pictures with your phone and use an app to create a PDF. See Scanning#Mobile_Devices as well as Gradescope's Student Workflow Page on Scanning Work on a Mobile Device

Uploading the Document

  • Once your PDF is made, look at your PDF as if you were grading it. If your scans have issues, fix these before creating the PDF to upload to Gradescope.
  • When you submit the PDF to Gradescope, you will be required to locate your answers for each problem. Note that the cover page does not go with any of the problems but rather is its own page. Be sure to include all the pages that have any work for a particular problem.
