Try The New Virtual Machines!

As of 20:43, 22 January 2015 (EST), the login-teer machines are working again!

Unless you have to print from a PS to a PDF, you should try the new virtual machines - just type

ssh -XY netid@login-teer.oit.duke.edu

and that will take you to a Teer-like machine that should have no problems.

The rest of this page is for posting "strange" things that happen, particularly with the Teer machines. If we can get them explained and solved - great! If not - at least you will know you were not alone! The machines to avoid are given below.

Machines to Avoid as of 18:14, 22 January 2015 (EST)

Teer 04, 13, 15, 16, 18, 21, 22, 23, 27, 31, 32, 35, 36, 37, 41, 43

Not Responding

Check Ping Results to see which machines are not responding to hails. As of 18:14, 22 January 2015 (EST) it's 04, 26.

AFS Drive not connected (EGR103 does not exist)

When you try to cd to an AFS folder, it doesn't exist.

Never gets past creating authority file

When you log in, after putting in a password, you never get a prompt.

Warnings / Other Things That Aren't Actually Problems

evince SettingsDaemon

When starting emacs, a strange error (or hundreds of them show up) saying:

** (evince:####): WARNING **: Failed to create dbus proxy for org.gnome.SettingsDaemon: Could not get owner of name 'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon': no such name

• Date(s): Starting two years ago, continuing on
• Machines: All Teer
• Solution: It still works...hit enter to get to a new command prompt but evince should be working

Xlib: extension missing

Occasionally, the error message comes up with graphical programs saying:

Xlib:  extension "RANDR" missing on display "localhost:10.0".

• Solution: The graphical programs still work...hit enter to get to a new command prompt but the graphical program should be working

Resolved

Never gets to a prompt

After you give your password, the Teer machine never gives you a prompt.

MATLAB LAPACK Issue

Some people reported an error with LAPACK when using polyval on MATLAB. OIT confirmed this is a known bug with MathWorks Bug Report and they are working on getting the fix installed.
