Revision as of 12:20, 4 September 2014

This page is for posting "strange" things that happen, particularly with the Teer machines. If we can get them explained and solved - great! If not - at least you will know you were not alone! The machines to avoid are given below.

As of 11:30, 3 September 2014 (EDT)

Teer 03, 04, 05, 12, 13, 14, 15, 18, 25, 26, 27, 34, 37, 38, and 39

matlab command not found

On teer37, the matlab command is missing.

  • Machines: Teer 37
  • Solution: Log in to a different machine...

MATLAB LAPACK Issue

Some people reported an error with LAPACK when using polyval on MATLAB. OIT confirmed this is a known bug with MathWorks Bug Report and they are working on getting the fix installed.

  • Date(s): 9/2/2014
  • Machines: Teer 4, 12, 13, 25, 26 - but only some people, not all
  • Solution: Log in to a different machine...

MATLAB R2013a vs. R2014a

Some people type matlab & and an older version of MATLAB comes up.

  • Date(s): 9/2/2014
  • Machines: Teer 15, 27, 34
  • Solution: Log in to a different machine...

evince SettingsDaemon

When starting emacs, a strange error (or hundreds of them show up) saying:

** (evince:####): WARNING **: Failed to create dbus proxy for org.gnome.SettingsDaemon: Could not get owner of name 'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon': no such name
  • Date(s): Starting two years ago, continuing on
  • Machines: All Teer
  • Solution: It still works...hit enter to get to a new command prompt but evince should be working

Xlib: extension missing

Occasionally, the error message comes up with graphical programs saying:

Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "localhost:10.0".
  • Date(s): Starting two years ago, continuing on
  • Machines: All Teer
  • Solution: The graphical programs still work...hit enter to get to a new command prompt but the graphical program should be working

Other

  • Teer 05 and Teer 14 hung up on several people on the morning of 9/3/2014
