Accessing the Assignment

  1. Log into Gradescope.
  2. Click your course to open the course dashboard.
  3. Open the assignment:
    • If visible under Active Assignments, click it directly.
    • Otherwise, click Assignments in the left navigation sidebar to view all assignments, then select yours.
  4. In the problem list, click the name of the problem you are assigned to grade.
    • Note: Do not click the "Submissions" link that appears on hover. Clicking the problem name takes you directly to the first ungraded submission.

Grading Workflow & Navigation

Before grading, review Gradescope's Grading with Rubrics guide. Focus on List View (we do not use Grid View).

Applying Rubric Items & Comments

  1. Select the Hand Tool: Ensure the hand cursor is selected (far-left icon in the toolbar at the top right of the grading area).
  2. Place an Annotation: Double-click the page near the student's mistake. A pop-up menu will appear showing either rubric items or reusable comments.
  3. Assign the Rubric Item:
    • Switch to the rubric list and choose the appropriate deduction or credit item.
    • If a student's answer is fully correct, you must select the "Correct" rubric item; otherwise, Gradescope marks the submission as ungraded.
  4. Add an Explanatory Comment: Add a comment directly below the placed item explaining the deduction. Previously entered comments are saved automatically for easy reuse across other submissions.

Important Rubric Rules

  • Never edit existing rubric descriptions or point values. Modifying an existing item alters scores and descriptions retroactively across the entire course.
  • Add, don't edit: If no existing item matches the mistake, create a new one using Add Rubric Item.
  • Single-use restriction: Rubric items can only be applied once per submission. If an error occurs multiple times and requires repeated deductions, create distinct items (e.g., append "(2x)", "(3x)").

Moving Between Submissions & Leaving

  • Next Student: When finished with a submission, click Next Ungraded or press Z on your keyboard.
  • Exiting Early: If you are splitting grading for a single problem and need to stop before finishing all submissions, return to the problem overview by clicking Grade Submissions in the left navigation bar.
    • Tip: If the sidebar is collapsed, click the menu toggle icon (≡>) at the top left to expand it.
  • Finished: Once all submissions for a problem are evaluated, Gradescope will automatically return you to the assignment overview.
