Hello! I'm Ilhan Gokhan and I am a freshman at Duke University. I plan to major in biomedical engineering and look forward to taking advantage of what Duke has to provide. In my spare time, I enjoy playing the piano and listening to music.

Looking at various MATLAB demonstrations, the one I liked the best was the script that analyzed data from the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. I find it interesting how we can get so much out of raw data when we analyze it with something like MATLAB. Particularly because we're in the age of "big data," this type of analysis will become very valuable. Other amusing demonstrations included the animated logo, in which the surface of the MATLAB logo oscillates in special ways. It was not only interesting to look at, but it made me curious about the math behind that graph. Apparently, that logo is an eigenfunction of the wave function. Finally, I think that the bending truss script is an important one in that it has to do with structural integrity of infrastructure. Coming from a town that has had a major overpass closed for being structurally compromised, I think it's important that the U.S. invest more in infrastructure; fortunately, I'm sure Duke will prepare us well if we want to go down that path.
