About Me

I am currently a freshman at Duke. I am taking EGR 103, Chem 101, and the Language and Identity and Politics of Language seminars for the Power of Language focus group. I am a part of the Duke University Marching Band, the Collegium Musicum, and the Devil's Rejects. I am currently planning to major in Biomedical Engineering.

Before Duke

I come from Quakertown, PA, and attended Quakertown Community Senior High School. I am a very musical person, and in high school participated in symphonic band, marching band, jazz band, select choir (which despite being called "select" is a class that anyone could take), Varsity Singers (which is an auditioned singing group), Men's Ensemble, and the musicals Me and My Girl and Thoroughly Modern Millie. In addition, I went to the Pennsylvania Music Educator's Association All-State Festival twice on euphonium, which is my primary instrument. Other than music, I am very interested in biology and chemistry, although I tend to find interest in most subjects.

For Fun

My favorite book and movie genre is science fiction/fantasy. Some of my favorite books and movies are the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin and the TV adaptation Game of Thrones, the Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R. Tolkein and its movie adaptations, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling and its movie adaptations, Star Wars, and Doctor Who, as well as just about everything by Stephen King.

Name Pronunciation

I pronounce my name (Colin Fowler) as CAW-lin FOW-ler, where the "aw" is the sound you make when you see something cute ("Aww, look at the puppy!").

Grand Challenges in Engineering

The Liquid Fluoride Thorium Paradigm, Charles Barton, The Oil Drum, created 20 January 2009, accessed 14 September 2014 (Grand Challenge)

MATLAB Demonstrations

My favorite MATLAB demonstration was the Viewing a Penny one because I thought it was really impressive how clear the image in the contour map could be with only 15 contour lines. I also thought it was cool how clear the image of the penny was in the second method of assigning color to the contour map.
