About Me

I am a freshman in Trinity College of Arts and Sciences hoping to switch into Pratt School of Engineering for the term Fall 2015. I am currently planning on majoring in Biomedical Engineering. Before coming to Duke, I lived in South Florida my entire life and attended the same school, Saint Andrew's School, for eleven years.

Name Pronunciation

My name, Alice Silberstein, should be pronounced A-liss SIL-burr-steen. Often people will either say Alice Silverstein, with a v, or pronounce the last syllable of my last name as "stine" instead of "steen."

Extracurricular Activities

  • CHANCE Tutoring
  • FEMMES volunteering
  • Duke Chamber Players
  • Club Tennis Team

MATLAB Demonstrations

My favorite of the demonstrations I viewed was not one of the assigned ones. Instead, I particularly appreciated the demonstration of the game Minesweeper. Though I could not view the actual code that generated the game, it was fascinating to me because Minesweeper is a game I particularly enjoyed playing on my computer when I was younger. Right now, the work I am doing with MATLAB seems relatively simple. I can see how it can be useful to efficiently perform extended calculations and display data, but it is difficult for me to imagine it doing much more than that. By viewing an amusing game generated by MATLAB I can more easily picture performing more advanced functions through the system.
