About Me
I am currently a freshman at Duke University studying mechanical engineering in the Pratt School of Engineering. I am from Eagle River, Alaska, but I have lived in many places, including New Jersey, California, Tokyo, and Texas. I am currently undecided about what I want to do at Duke, but hopefully engineering will clear that up for me.
Name Pronunciation
My name is Bryce Wolery. Phonetically, it is pronounced "buh-rice wuh-ler-ee". The IPA pronunciation is '| ˈbraɪs <wolery> |', but this is not very helpful, and it does not know how to pronounce my last name. Therefore, "buh-rice wuh-ler-ee" is the best way to go.
Current Classes
I am currently taking Writing 101: Cover of the Rolling Stone, EGR 103, Math 122 (Calc II), and Intro to Political Economy.
Grand Challenges
A Radioactive Challenge: Preventing Nuclear Terrorism Jennifer Smyser, The Stanley Foundation, created January 2011, accessed 13 September 2013 (Prevent Nuclear Terror)
MATLAB Demonstrations
My favorite demonstration was the one about the Loma Prieta Earthquake. I like it because it is a real world application of MATLAB technology. I think it is amazing that we can push a few buttons and upload thousands of data points and manipulate them to help analyze the earthquake. I like how there is a command for integration, because I can finally see how the calculus that I learn in other classes can be applied to a real world problem. Also, the graphs that MATLAB will generate using the data are remarkable. The way how it is so simple to create a 3D graph showing exactly what we want is amazing. The biggest thing for me about this demonstration is that we used actual data so analyze a real problem rather than just a problem out of a textbook.
