EGR 103/Fall 2023/Beginning of Lab

This page covers processes that are useful at the beginning of a lab section as well as processes that are useful when you are ready to start working on labs for EGR 103. In the example commands below, anywhere you see NN you should replace that with the two-digit version of the lab number, adding a leading zero if the lab number is less than ten. This is the Fall 2023 version of this page.

Log In and Setup

Log in to your computer and make sure your Box Drive Folder (hereafter called Box/) is mounted to your computer. If you did not successfully complete the work done in Lab 1, you will need to follow all the instructions at Lab 01 -- please let a TA know as soon as you can that you need help getting started so they can help get you set up for lab.

Setting Up Files for Spyder

• Find your Box Drive Folder using File Explorer or Finder, then click into your EGR103F23 folder.
• Open a browser to Dr. G's Public Box Folder and then click the ... icon to the far right of the appropriate lab number and download the entire folder. On Windows, it will be in a zip file.
  • Mac: Drag the folder you just downloaded into your Box\EGR103F23 folder
  • Windows: Open the zip file that you just downloaded, then drag the contents of the zip file (a single folder) into your Box/EGR103F23 folder. Click in the Box/EGR103F23/LabNNFiles folder to see the files.

Spyder

• Start Spyder. You can go through Anaconda Navigator or, if using Windows, go to Start -> Anaconda3 -> Spyder.

Setting up Overleaf

This part is not required at the start of lab. Whenever you are ready to start working on the written lab report, you can set up the new Overleaf project.

• Open another browser tab and log into Overleaf. Open your EGR103F23 project.
• Create a new folder called LABNN.
• Upload the starter files from your Box/EGR103F23/LabNNFiles folder to the Overleaf folder for that lab - note that you need to upload the individual files; you can't just upload the folder.
  • Click on the LABNN folder name in Overleaf
  • Click the triple-dot option icon to its right
  • Click upload
  • Drag the files from your Box/EGR103F23/LabNNFiles folder onto the Drag here rectangle.
• After the files are on Overleaf, click on the LabNNSample_F23.tex file in your Overleaf project and rename it to labNN.tex. Hit Recompile. Overleaf should recognize labNN.tex as the main document since it is the only one with a \begin{document} in it, but if not, you can go to the menu for the project by clicking the Menu button at top left of Overleaf and then from that menu changing the "Main document" to labNN.tex
