About Me
My name is Jeremy Gonzales, and I a current first-year student in Duke University's Pratt School of Engineering. I am a graduate of Penncrest High School in Media, Pennsylvania. I have not formally declared which engineering discipline I will pursue at Duke, but currently I wish to study biomedical engineering with a minor in neuroscience.
About My Name
The question I have been asked most since my arrival on campus a month ago, excluding the big five that all freshmen ask each other, has been about my heritage. The juxtaposition of my Hispanic last name against my pale complexion and reddish hair has left many people wondering. My red hair and pale complexion can be attributed to my mother, who has the same coloration as I do. My last name comes from my father's side of the family, but that's about all we know. My father is predominately of German ancestry. The may have been from his father's father, or it could have been from his father's father's father, or someone else along that line of paternal ancestry. We're just not sure who.

Other Involvement at Duke
I came one week early to duke to participate in the preorientation program called Project BUILD, which stands for Building Undergraduate involvement in the Life of Durham. Project BUILD's focus was community involvement. We were split up into crews of eight - five first-years and three upperclassmen - and for four of the eight days we went to various service sites and volunteered our time and our labor. The rest of the days were spent bonding with your crew and the other crews. I wish to continue working on service-related projects throughout my time at Duke, especially Project BUILD.

Favorite MATLAB Demonstration
My favorite MATLAB demonstration was that of the Traveling Salesman. It was mind-boggling to see how the various functions of MATLAB, from something as simple as generating the plot of the U.S. border and some cities within to something as complicated as a genetic algorithm to optimize the salesman's travels to minimize the cost of travel between all of those cities.
