About Me

I am an undergraduate student here at Duke, a freshman planning to study Biomedical Engineering in the Pratt School of Engineering.

Name Pronunciation

My name is Fernando Zapata. My last name is pronounced "Zuh-paw-tah." Like the Spanish word for shoe. Except like female version, I guess. So that's pretty cool I guess.

Current Courses

For the Fall 2017 semester, I am enrolled in Chemistry 101, EGR 103 (obviously), and two Focus courses as a part of the Genetics and Genomics Focus.

Grand Challenges for Engineering Article

Major advance in solar cells made from cheap, easy-to-use perovskite, Tom Kirk, Phys.org, 21 September 2017, accessed 22 September 2017 (Make Solar Energy Economical)

Favorite MATLAB Demonstration

My favorite MATLAB demonstration was the one regarding 2-D and 3-D plots. MATLAB's usefulness for producing plots is a fundamental function that directly relates to what we are doing in class. Plots, whether they be line plots or surface plots, are widely applicable for graphically showcasing data in a manner that is typically more easily digestible. Moreover, by being able to show data with different color lines and different markers, multiple data sets can be shown simultaneously, made possible as well by the "hold on" and "hold off" commands. Overall, plots are integral to the practical use of MATLAB in a way that people not used to analyzing data can also digest.
