Basically for a while people have thought that nitrite oxidizing bacteria have been relying mostly on nitrite as their source of energy, but scientists found that they also depend on hydrogen.  This helps with the Grand Challenge of managing the nitrogen cycle because to support the nitrite oxidizing bacteria, scientists know they can use hydrogen as an energy source.
