About me

I am currently a freshman at Duke University, intending to major in Biomedical Engineering. Before attending Duke, I attended Deerfield Beach High School in Deerfield Beach, Florida, where I earned my International Baccaulerate(IB) diploma and graduated 2nd in my class. I was born in Atlanta, Georgia, but my family is originally of Indian descent. I intend to complete my pre-med requirements at Duke and eventually pursue a career as an orthopedic surgeon.

Name Pronounciation

My name is pronounced Sum-Ear Pun-dar-A. The most common mistakes made with my name are the misspelling of my first name(2 E's not an I!) and the slaughtering of my last name, both of which are forgivable mistakes.

Extracurriculars

I am currently involved in the following extracurriculars at Duke University:

  • Duke Club Swim Team
  • Chair of the Logistics Committee of Duke Relay for Life
  • Writer for the Sports section of the Chronicle
  • Biomedical Engineer Society
  • Investment Club

In the past, I have been involved with many other organizations, most notably as Co-President of my high school's chapter of Dance Marathon. Dance Marathon was a student-run organization that planned numerous fundraising events to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals to support severely ill children in need of medical treatments.

In addition to my extracurriculars, I am currently employed as lifeguard by Duke Aquatics. My previous employers include:

  • Lifeguard at Boca YMCA (2014)
  • Math/Reading Tutor at the Kumon Learning Center(2009)

MATLAB Demonstrations

My favorite demonstration was the presentation about the Loma Prieta Earthquake. I enjoyed this demonstration because it clearly illustrated a way that MATLAB could be applied to the real world. Often times, it is hard to relate to the things we learn in lab and lecture because there seems to be little real-life application of them outside of for homework and assignments. However, this demonstration took concepts I have learned about in class (plots, formatting styles, changing variables, etc) and applied them to find the velocity, position and trajectory of an earthquake. A few new concepts I noticed in this demonstration were the use of subplots and the use of 3-D plotting. After going through this demonstration, I slowly started understanding what some of the new commands did and what the practical use of MATLAB, outside of Monday/Friday lecture, really is.
